How Does a Suction Excavator Work?
The process involves several coordinated systems working together:
1. Compressed Air Lance or Jetting
Operators typically use an air lance or high-pressure water jet to break up the soil or loosen materials. This is especially useful around utilities or tree roots, where precision is critical.
2. High-Powered Suction System
The loosened material is sucked up through a flexible suction hose (often 250–300 mm in diameter), powered by one or more large centrifugal fans or vacuum blowers. These fans create a vacuum that moves tens of thousands of cubic metres of air per hour.
3. Debris Separation
As the air and material enter the excavator:
- Cyclone chambers and filter systems separate solid debris from the air.
- Larger particles fall into a debris tank, and finer dust is captured by microfilters.
- The cleaned air is then released back into the atmosphere.
4. Spoil Storage & Disposal
The solid debris is collected in a storage chamber (typically 4–12 m³), which can be hydraulically tipped or offloaded once full.
